Why Social Skills Groups Help Children Thrive
Children learn social skills best by practicing them and having fun while they do!
At Performance Pediatrics, our “Ohana Means Family” Luau Social Skills Group combines movement, games, sensory experiences, and themed activities to help children strengthen friendships while developing essential life skills.
What Is a Social Skills Group?
A social skills group is a therapist-led program that gives children opportunities to practice communication, cooperation, emotional regulation, and problem-solving in a structured, supportive environment.
Instead of simply talking about social situations, children experience them through interactive play and group activities.
Why a Luau Theme?
The Hawaiian word “Ohana” means family, reminding us that everyone deserves a place where they feel accepted, valued, and included.
Our tropical-themed event encourages children to:
- Meet new friends
- Practice kindness and teamwork
- Participate in sensory-rich activities
- Build confidence through movement and play
- Celebrate each child’s unique strengths
The Power of Play
Games, dancing, and movement do more than entertain; they help children strengthen executive functioning, motor planning, emotional regulation, and communication skills while naturally encouraging peer interaction.
By making learning enjoyable, children often feel more comfortable taking social risks, trying new activities, and developing lasting friendships.
